ALEXA LF On-board Batteries

ALEXA LF On-board Batteries

ALEXA LF On-board Batteries

ALEXA LF On-board Batteries

Introduction

In order to provide ALEXA best image quality at higher pixel counts, ALEXA LF has a higher power draw than previous ALEXA cameras. Therefore, the current ALEXA Gold mount and V Lock battery adapters will not work with the ALEXA LF. We are working on a number of solutions for on-board batteries, the first being that we will sell the Hawk-Woods ALEXA battery adapter so the Hawk-Woods 26V Reel Power on-board batteries can be used on ALEXA LF. This is a proven solution that has been used successfully on the ALEXA 65 over the last years.

Product Name, Order Number, List Price and Description

Hawk-Woods RP-CFA1 Battery Adapter..................................................................... K2.0019383          € 335,00

This "Reel Power - Camera Fitting ALEXA (RP-CFA1)" attaches to the back of the ALEXA, ALEXA Plus, ALEXA Plus 4:3, ALEXA M body, ALEXA Studio, ALEXA HD, ALEXA HD Plus, ALEXA XT, ALEXA XT M body, ALEXA XT Plus, ALEXA XT Studio, ALEXA SXT EV, ALEXA SXT Plus, ALEXA SXT Studio, ALEXA SXT W or ALEXA LF and accepts Hawk-Woods 26V Reel Power on-board batteries. The RP-CFA1 has two D-tap and two 24V RS connectors.

ALEXA LF Power Draw

In order to process the increased pixel count while still maintaining ALEXA best overall image quality, the ALEXA LF draws 120W and 160W while recording, with EVF-1 and wireless video transmitter on, but no further accessories attached. 120W have been measured while recording ProRes 4444 in LF 16:9 sensor mode at 24 fps onto SxS PRO+ 256 GB cards. 160W have been measured while recording ARRIRAW at 90 fps in LF Open Gate sensor mode onto SXR Capture Drives. Electronic accessories will increase power draw based on the accessories’ draw.

ALEXA LF and Block Batteries

The power draw of the ALEXA LF is no problem for the existing 24V block batteries that are attached with a cable to the ALEXA LF BAT connector, so the ALEXA LF can be powered with existing 24V block batteries.

ALEXA LF and On-board Batteries

The top end of the ALEXA LF power draw at 12V can generate currents that various components in the camera/battery-adapter/on-board-battery system are not rated for. Therefore, the power input of the ALEXA LF has been set to 19.5 - 34 V, which in turn means that the current ALEXA battery adapters for 12V Gold mount (BAB-G K2.72003.0 and BAT-G K2.72006.0) and 12V V Lock (BAB-V K2.72010.0 and BAT-V K2.72011.0) will not work with the ALEXA LF.

Hawk-Woods Reel Power Batteries

While we are working on a number of solutions for on-board batteries with the ALEXA LF, the first solution available is the use of Hawk-Woods 26V Reel Power on-board batteries. These batteries are being used successfully with the ALEXA 65 and, since the RP-CFA1 is compatible with other ALEXA models, they can also be used with ALEXA Classic, XT, SXT and SXT W. A separate rod mounted Reel Power battery adapter is available for ALEXA Mini.

Important Notes

• Please note that the Hawk-Woods Reel Power battery adapter RP-CFA1 is not compatible with current Gold Mount or V Lock batteries.

• Please note that current Gold Mount or V Lock battery adapters and chargers are not compatible with Hawk-Woods Reel Power batteries.

-  Hawk-Woods 26V Reel Power batteries require a Hawk-Woods Reel Power battery charger.

• While the Hawk-Woods 26V Reel Power adapter-to-battery interface looks similar to the V Lock interface, it is not.

-  The Hawk-Woods 26V Reel Power batteries have two extra pins that fits in a groove and a hole on the Hawk-Woods battery adapters. This prevents Reel Power batteries from being used on 12V V Lock battery adapters.

-  The Hawk-Woods Reel Power battery adapters have two rectangular extrusions that fit into grooves on the Reel Power batteries. This prevents 12V V Lock batteries from being placed on Hawk-Woods Reel Power battery adapters.

• Please note that the Hawk-Woods batteries do not communicate with the camera to report their charge status. Use the LEDs on the side of the battery to determine their charge status.

• Additionally, we are working on a solution that would support bebob 12V ACine and VCine High Load on-board batteries and we are looking into a dual battery mount (aka T-piece or shark-fin) solution that would support traditional 12V Gold Mount and 12V V Lock on-board batteries. As soon as we know more, we will inform you.
